Stress and Adrenal Fatigue

Stress and Adrenal Fatigue – are you suffering from it?
Read on to get an insight on stress and adrenal fatigue and how we may be able to help if you think you could have it or are suffering from it.

Adrenal glands are the size of a walnut and sit on top of the kidneys, they produce a variety of hormones such as adrenaline, aldosterone and cortisol. If stress is sustained and the adrenals are continuously stimulated, they can’t respond as they need to, and the amount of hormones they secrete is insufficient.

What happens when the adrenal glands are under constant load, stimulation and stress?
There are 3 primary causes of stress; physical, chemical and emotional stress, they can happen on a daily basis with anyone. If the adrenal glands are under a constant state of demand the body may have symptoms such as:

– Fatigue
– Irritability
– Depression
– Anxiety
– Decreased sex drive
– Salt and sugar cravings

What can we do?
Reduce our chemical stress and loading – Reducing chemicals that we are exposed to on a day to day basis such as food preservatives, herbicides, pesticides. Replacing them with whole foods, organic produce, probiotics and restoring our stomach lining with bone broth.

Reduce our physical stress and loading –  Changing the way we use technology. By bending over our phone or computer we are constantly driving forward head posture, confusing our brain into thinking it is in a state of flight or fight mode. Slight changes to the way you hold your device, using a posture corrector on a regular basis and changing up your ergonomic work station can help to reduce the physical loading. Also reducing our exposure to blue light from our screens particularly in the evening, by minimising your screen time, adding a software to your device (https://justgetflux.com) or using red lensed glasses.

Reduce our emotional stress and loading – There are various types of emotional stress. It can occur on a daily basis from things such as being unhappy at a job, relationship or school. It can occur from the past (PTSD) such as witnessing a traumatic or severe event. It may be future stress, worrying about finances – are you able to pay your bills, rent etc, what am I going to do next? Seeking professional advice from a counsellor or confiding in a loved one may help to reduce the different types of emotional stress.

Identifying what may be causing your stress build-up is important, so you know the steps to take in order to significantly reduce the adrenal constant firing.
