What’s the definition of health to you?

Health! What’s the definition of health to you?

“Is there anything wrong? Do you feel sick?”
“No”
“Oh good, you’re healthy then”

Or

“I’ve got a rash”
“Put this cream on, that’ll help”

Although in some situations, the above may be true and it is recommended that you take the advice of your doctor, but, there’s also a lot of symptoms that occur throughout life that we might just cover up and not actually understand what the root cause or trigger of the symptom is and most of the time we find that one symptom may often lead to another and another…

Our mind and bodies are incredible things and each and every one of us has a different way of handling stress or sickness. If we look at a symptom and ask ‘why’ then delve a bit deeper and ask ‘why’ again (there could be many ‘why’ questions), it may help to lead you into finding the root cause.

Let’s take the skin rash as an example of delving deeper and asking ‘why’ did I get that. “Why do you have that rash?” It may be because your body isn’t producing enough anti-inflammatory hormones. “Why don’t I have enough anti-inflammatory hormones?”, it may be because something else in your body is using the ingredients you need to make them!

When you become stressed your body often switches into fight or flight (survival) mode. Your adrenal glands become activated and use the cholesterol in your body to make stress hormones (cortisol). If your adrenal glands are in survival mode for a long period of time, eventually they may exhaust and when there’s very little left in your body to create other necessary hormones, it could then lead to various symptoms occurring, one being inflammation – such as a skin rash…

So if you’re stressed and your adrenal glands are fired up, it may also mean that your brain is fired up too. Do you find yourself sensitive to sound or light? Or do you get vivid dreams and tend to sleep lightly? If you answered yes then it may be another symptom showing that you are in sympathetic dominance or ‘fight or flight’ mode. For females, if your body is in fight or flight mode, you may also suffer from painful and heavy monthly cycles – this could be due to lack of progesterone that your body should be making.

Other not so ‘random’ symptoms you may suffer from if your body is in fight or flight mode could be: Tightening of your neck and shoulders, Gut and digestive issues, Headaches, Fatigue, Fertility issues, Feeling cold, Brittle nails, Joint pain…

The next question we ask is, do we deal with the symptom as and when it comes? Take the pill for your headache or put some cream on your rash OR do we go that bit deeper and look to see if there’s another cause?

Stress isn’t just caused because of emotion, it can also be triggered physically and chemically to! If you are sitting at a desk all day and then on your phone with a forward head posture, your brain releases stress signals as it thinks that you are preparing for attack and ready to run or escape.

If you are putting chemicals like artificial sugars, pesticides and herbicides into your body, your brain releases the chemical stressors to try and keep the balance of rest, digest, repair and reproduce functions – this is just 2 of many examples!

In the world, particularly during these crazy times, we cannot avoid stress. Stress in small doses is fine – it’s natural. But, our body and brain are not built to be under constant stress and what we need to start doing is trying to find balance.
